DoD 2001 Maintenance Symposium Set for Kansas City

The Department of Defense 2001 Maintenance Symposium and Exhibition will be held Oct. 29-Nov.1, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo. The theme for this fifth annual event is "Meeting the Readiness Challenge through Innovative Maintenance."

The symposium will explore how the military Services are applying innovative solutions to execute their maintenance requirements. Maintenance is being reshaped to support the operating forces, even while the operating forces are being rebuilt to address the realities of future conflicts.

Defense maintenance is the business of more than 700,000 military (active and reserve components) and DoD civilian personnel. In addition, more than 1,000 private sector firms are engaged in performing maintenance of DoD materiel. Supported weapon systems include more than 300 ships, 15,000 aircraft/helicopters, 1,000 strategic missiles, and 250,000 ground combat/tactical vehicles. Hundreds of thousands of additional assets are also supported.

A major highlight of the symposium is the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards banquet set for Wednesday, Oct. 31, where outstanding military maintenance units will be honored.

The DoD Maintenance Symposium and Exhibition is sponsored by the deputy under secretary of Defense for Logistics and Materiel Readiness in conjunction with the National Defense Industrial Association. The entire event is open for press coverage.
