Since the launch of Data.gov in May 2009, which is managed by the GSA, the Department of Defense has been committed to expanding public access to information and adopting a presumption in favor of openness and access with regard to making high-quality, authoritative data sets available to the public, as long as they are not restricted for national security, privacy or other statutory reasons.

To date, DoD has published over 300 high-value datasets and tools for public consumption.  The Department also contributed 55 of the initial 94 datasets included as part of the launch of the Law Data Community, providing access to thousands of DoD legal decisions dating back to 1996.
