We must improve
military pay and retirement benefits to adequately compensate the dedicated service of our
men and women in uniform.
President
Clintons Fiscal Year 2000 budget request includes a three-part package of
significant pay increases and retirement improvements. Beginning January 1, 2000, we will
increase pay across the board by 4.4 percent.
In fiscal years 2001 through 2005, this pay increase will be 3.9
percent annually.
Targeted pay raises will enable us to do a better job rewarding performance,
compensate people for their skills, education and experience, and encourage them to
continue their military service.
Today, in this
uncertain time of high demand and smaller forces, were committed to supporting a
20-year retirement plan providing 50 percent of basic pay to all service members.
