The Chancellor for Education and Professional DevelopmentAlthough our warfighters receive the highest quality education and training, our civilian workforce has not had the same opportunities for professional development.

To enhance professional educational programs for civilian professionals . . .The Office of the Chancellor for Education was created to enhance professional educational programs for civilian professionals.

Dr. Jerome F. Smith was sworn in as the first DoD Education ChancellorOn October 2, 1998, Dr. Jerome F. Smith, former Dean of the National Defense University’s Information Resources Management College, was sworn in as DoD’s first Chancellor. The Chancellor is responsible for the quality of the Department’s professional education, including standards for curriculum and faculty.

Our goal . . .Our goal is to raise the quality of civilian training and professional development to world-class standards and to ensure that by the year 2000, consistent standards for curriculum and faculty are established across the Department.
