Energy Management

Energy ManagementThe Department of Defense spends almost $6 billion a year on energy—$2.2 billion on its buildings and facilities alone—and consumes three-quarters of the total energy used by the Federal Government.

President's Energy Reduction GoalsBy Presidential order, we must decrease our consumption of electricity, water, and natural gas. The President’s goal: to reduce energy consumption per square foot in our buildings and facilities 30 percent below 1985 levels by 2005 and implement strict energy conservation measures.

Beyond the GoalThe DoD plans to exceed that goal. This makes good business sense and reduces our greenhouse gas emissions.

Reducing Consumption & Saving $$ Through Energy ManagementThe DoD is reducing consumption by upgrading its existing buildings with energy efficient systems and using new sustainable design techniques to increase the energy efficiency of new construction.

Defense Utility SystemsThe DoD also plans to privatize all utility systems. Currently, 146 systems are privately owned and operated, and 2,367 systems are being considered for privatization.

Conveying utility systems to the private sector will save money, enhance energy efficiency, and allow the Department to focus on overall energy use and costs.
