| Army Family Heals Together, Stays Together |

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2009 – A retired U.S. Army captain, who survived third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body while stationed in Iraq, believes through family, faith and a lot of hard work, anything can be overcome. |

Capt. Alvin Eugene Shell Jr., of the 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), credits his wife Danielle, his three sons, his mother and father and his wife’s parents for helping him recover. They are his heroes.
“You can’t define a hero by one act,” Shell said. “A hero is a person that laces up his shoelaces every single day and doesn’t ask to be recognized, doesn’t ask for the accolades, or the rewards, or anything. They do it because of who they are.”

CPT Shell, you have humbled and blessed us all. Thank you for becoming a hero by acting upon what your Father and Mother taught you, by acting upon the value God places on one person's willingness to lay down their life for another. You did not falter; you did not fail. I thank God that you were chosen, and raised, and supported by your family and friends to live, overcome great adversity, and inspire all of us to stay true, and stand when the times of testing come. May God continue to bless you and your family.

CPT Shell, You are amazing! MSG Waddell and CW5 Hill (Ret) already said part of what I wanted to say... Just know that God has plans for you. Thanks for both your active duty service and your continued service in DHS. The fact that you choose to continue to serve (when you can opt for "100 percent P and T") speaks volumes about your dedication to our country and your core values.
