MacLeod is a combat correspondent assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, public affairs office. He took the images in this slideshow in Afghanistan in 2012 over four months, beginning in late March. They show a range of missions, including troops patrolling provinces, engaging in firefights and meeting with Afghan leaders over a meal.
"I count myself privileged to serve the paratroopers and families of the 82nd Airborne Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, N.C. Some might say that large-scale combat drops are a thing of the past, but few would argue that airborne units still attract soldiers who want to be the best. As we say, airborne – all the way.
There are 3,500 paratroopers in our brigade, and with that, 3,500 compelling stories to tell. Doing so in a combat zone has easily been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life and rates second only to being a husband to my wife, Barbara, and father to our children, Mattie and Douglas.
While we look forward to returning to the mountains and trout streams of our home state of Montana, being part of our nation’s defense during a time of war is an experience that none of us shall ever forget."
