A runner stretches to prepare for the 8K race in the 29th annual Marine Corps Marathon Oct. 31, 2004, in Washington, D.C. The first Marine Corps Reserve Marathon in 1976 hosted just 1,174 runners. More than 18,000 runners participated this year. Runners ranged in age from 14 to 83, including citizens from 38 countries, all 50 states, and 73 runners celebrating birthdays Oct. 31.
