| The Fife and Drum Corps, United States 3rd Infantry Regiment, Old Guard, practices the pass and review portion of the 55th Presidential Inauguration at Capitol Hill Jan. 9, 2005, just 11 days prior to the actual event. The Corps, comprised of 69-members, uses 10-hole fifes, handmade rope-tensioned drums and single-valve bugles, which bring to life the exciting sounds of the Continental Army. While traveling, the marching strength of the unit is normally 22 musicians, and the drum major and support personnel. They have participated in every Presidential Inaugural Parade since President John F. Kennedy's in 1961. The Old Guard provides military ceremonial support to the 55th Presidential Inauguration, to occur Jan. 20, 2005. More than 5,000 men and women in uniform are expected to take part in inaugural events. Defense Dept. photo by U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Tracy DeMarco |
