March 28, 1997
MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS

The Pennsylvania Army National Guard has announced the selection of the first female to command an Aviation Brigade. This stands as a first not only in the Army National Guard, but in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve as well. Colonel Jessica L. Wright, who enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1975 after graduating from Alderson Broaddus College, will command the 28th Division Aviation Brigade, headquartered at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. Presently an Army War College Military Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., Colonel Wright attended the Rotary Wing Aviator Course at Ft. Rucker, Ala., in 1978, and became the first female aviator in the Army National Guard. Her aviation unit assignments have included duty piloting the UH-1 Huey, CH-47 Chinook and the CH-54 Skycrane. Since 1986 when she joined the National Guard Bureau's full-time force, she has served as an ROTC instructor and most recently as Chief, Personnel Service Division, Army National Guard Personnel Directorate.
