As part of our "Total Force" concept, the Guard and Reserve
are indispensable to U.S. military operations. When the U.S.
decided to commit U.S. forces to Bosnia in December 1995, we
recognized that strong support from our Reserve Components would
be required. Since that time, more than 11,875 Guard and Reserve
personnel have supported Operation Joint Endeavor and now
Operation Joint Guard from bases in Bosnia, Croatia, the U.S.,
Hungary, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere in Europe. The following
seven Reserve Component units, 40 soldiers have received
mobilization orders:

The following 51 Reserve Component units, more than 2,460
soldiers, will be notified to begin training in preparation for
possible mobilization in support of operations in Bosnia. By
law, Army National Guard and Reserve units called up to
participate in Operation Joint Guard can serve no more than 270
days. During the next several months, Guard and Reserve units
currently deployed will need to be replaced, and many of these
newly-identified units will replace those currently deployed.
The remainder are being considered for future requirements.
These units have been notified in order to give them maximum
training time with the understanding that some may not be
actually called to active duty.
Reservists in support of Operation Joint Guard perform
combat and combat support missions including artillery fire
support, civil affairs, logistics, public affairs, medical
support, and other critical functions. There will be no overall
increase in the number of Guard and Reserve personnel authorized
to support operations in Bosnia as a result of this action. That
cap remains firm at 8,181.
