No. 083-M
MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS May 25, 1999

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jay L. Johnson will be the keynote speaker for the annual 500 Festival Memorial Service in Indianapolis Friday, May 28, 1999. The event begins at 11:45 a.m. (EDT) and is open to media coverage.

Nearly 100 Medal of Honor (MoH) recipients will attend the service, and wreaths will be laid at the World War II, Korean and Vietnam Memorials on the city's American Legion Mall. The service will conclude with a missing-man formation flyover by Indiana Air Guard F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The annual memorial service dates back to 1866.

A prelude to the service will commence at 11 a.m. and will feature a performance by the Great Lakes Navy Band and flyovers of World War II-vintage aircraft. During the prelude Lt. Gen. Russell C. Davis, chief of the National Guard Bureau, and Mr. Paul Bucha, president of the Medal of Honor Society, will offer remarks.

At 3:30 p.m. Johnson will speak as the senior military representative at the dedication of the nation's only memorial to Medal of Honor recipients at Military Park in Indianapolis. Johnson will be joined on the platform by Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon, and the attending MoH recipients.

Media availabilities will be held in conjunction with each event. For more information concerning Johnson's participation in these and other Indy 500 Festival events, contact Navy Capt. Jim Kudla at (703) 697-9929.
