No. 184-M
MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS November 29, 1999

Army Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, received the 1999 North Carolina Award in Public Service at a banquet on Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle, N. C. Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. presented the award.

Shelton, a native of Tarboro, N.C., was recognized for his distinguished 36-year military career. The North Carolina Award is the state's highest civilian honor and is presented annually to North Carolinians who have distinguished themselves in the areas of fine arts, literature, public service and science.

On Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, Shelton was awarded the 1999 Distinguished Alumnus Award by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) at a dinner in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. He was recognized for demonstrating exceptional leadership in his public service career and as an example to the students of America's colleges and universities to underscore the value of public higher education.

Shelton received his master's degree in political science from Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala in 1973, and is the first from his alma mater to be so honored. Dr. Roy H. Saigo, the university's chancellor, nominated him and the AASCU board of directors unanimously voted for Shelton to receive the 1999 award.

For more information concerning the award presentations, contact Navy Capt. Steve Pietropaoli, the chairman's special assistant for Public Affairs at (703) 697-4272.
