MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS

Gen. Henry H. Shelton, U.S. Army, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, departed Andrews Air Force Base, Md., this morning for Honolulu, Hawaii, to participate in the 1998 Asia Pacific Chiefs of Defense Conference. The conference theme is "Asia-Pacific Security Challenges of the 21st Century," and is hosted by Adm. Joseph W. Prueher, USN, commander-in-chief, U.S. Pacific Command. Shelton returns to Washington early Friday morning.
