Combined Force Arrests Haqqani Network Facilitator in Khost Province

KABUL, Afghanistan, March 13, 2013 – A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani network facilitator and another insurgent in the Tanai district of Afghanistan’s Khost province today, military officials reported.

The Haqqani facilitator is believed to be responsible for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces and to have been involved in procurement and distribution of improvised explosive devices and other weapons to insurgents in Khost and Paktia provinces.

The security force also seized seven assault rifles, four ammunition magazines, two handguns, 75 rounds of ammunition and IED-making materials.

In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force arrested an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commander in Kunduz province’s Kunduz district. He is suspected of directing subordinate fighters in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and is a known IED expert who has passed his knowledge to other members of an extremist cell.

-- In Helmand province’s Marjah district, a combined force arrested three insurgents during a search for a Taliban commander suspected of being a senior administrator for the insurgent network in the district. He also is believed to have been deeply involved in planning, coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also seized two machine guns and 400 rounds of ammunition.
