Miller to Step Down as Pentagon Policy Chief

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2013 – Dr. James N. Miller, the Defense Department’s undersecretary for policy, has announced he will step down in January.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told reporters today during a regular news briefing that Miller told his staff the news this morning.

Miller has done an outstanding job in the Pentagon for nearly five years, Little said. He added that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has depended on Miller greatly during his first several months in office, and wishes him the very best for his future.

In response to questions about other DOD leaders stepping down -- Deputy Secretary Ash Carter and Little himself have also recently announced they will depart -- the press secretary said such changes are routine, particularly when presidential administrations enter a second term.

“These are amazingly intense jobs, and [Miller] has performed exceptionally well for nearly five years,” Little said.

Hagel looks forward to filling the soon-to-be vacant spaces on his leadership team, and “knows that we have able professionals who can come in behind and take the baton from senior officials who are departing,” the press secretary said.
