"Secretary Hagel recognized Kazakhstan's continued support to the Northern Distribution Network and stabilization efforts in Afghanistan,” Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in a statement summarizing the meeting.
The Northern Distribution Network is composed of integrated land, sea and air routes used to bring cargo along commercial networks to troops in Afghanistan.
Hagel emphasized the shared interest the United States and Kazakhstan have in maintaining stability in Afghanistan and the entire Central Asian region after 2014, Little said, through political, economic and security commitments.
"Secretary Hagel stressed the mutual desire for a strategic partnership based on shared interests such as counterterrorism and defense modernization," the press secretary added.
