WASHINGTON, Jan. 29, 2014 – The Defense Department will launch a review of the military awards and decoration process, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said today.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel asked for the review, Kirby told reporters during a news conference. It will look at the process from distinguishing devices through the Medal of Honor.

“Now that we’re getting towards the end of the combat mission in Afghanistan, [Hagel] wants to take a more holistic view of the awards process and the decoration process,” Kirby said. “We're hoping to have that review process done by the end of this year, or early 2015.”

The secretary wants a look at the entire awards process, rather than “cherry-picking it with this device here or that ribbon there,” the admiral added.

The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness will lead the effort for the department. The services will also participate in the review, defense officials said.
