President, First Lady to Attend Fort Hood Memorial Service

WASHINGTON, April 6, 2014 – President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will travel to Fort Hood, Texas, April 9 to attend a memorial ceremony for the victims of the April 2 shooting, according to a statement issued today by a senior White House official.

Further details on the president’s and first lady’s travel to Texas will be made available in the coming days, the statement said.

At Fort Hood on April 2, Army Spc. Ivan A. Lopez, 34, allegedly killed three soldiers and wounded 16 others before fatally shooting himself with his .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Lopez was confronted by a military policewoman just prior to his demise.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
