American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2005 – Terrorists attacked a convoy of contractors about 11:30 a.m. today while the contractors were delivering supplies for coalition forces west of Baghdad, Iraq, according to U.S. officials. A coalition quick-reaction force responded to the attack scene and secured the area. No further information was available.

Elsewhere in Iraq, officials reported today that two Marines died June 6 from separate improvised-explosive-device attacks near their vehicles. One incident occurred on June 5 and the other on June 6, both near Fallujah.

The Marines were assigned to Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A disturbance erupted at Abu Ghraib prison on June 5 shortly after a detainee, using the cover of a blinding heavy sandstorm at night, was caught trying to escape, officials said today.

Detainees in several compounds began throwing rocks at portable light generators and the guards. The prison's quick-reaction force and extra guards responded and restored control.

The injured, four guards and six detainees, received medical treatment on site.

Officials said all of Abu Ghraib's 3,500 detainees were accounted for.

A U.S. soldier died of noncombat-related injuries June 5 at Camp Dublin near Baghdad International Airport, officials reported today, adding that the incident is under investigation.

The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
