WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2004 – The International Zone training facility in Baghdad, Iraq, graduated 32 Iraqi Police Service officers from the Basic Criminal Investigation course and another 85 from the Election Security Course on Oct. 14.

The Basic Criminal Investigation course is one of numerous specialty training courses offered at the facility to police officers as part of the Iraqi government's ongoing effort to augment the basic training of its police forces, officials said.

Designed for officers having previously completed the eight-week Basic Police Training Course, it covers additional areas of instruction including theft, burglary, arson, robbery, sexual offenses, interview and interrogation, and homicide. The officers also received in-classroom instruction and hands-on training in fingerprinting, photography, tool marks, and plaster casting, as well as practical skills.

Graduates of the two-week course will conduct crime-scene searches as well as routine criminal investigations.

Another course, the Election Security Course, is part of the Iraqi government's efforts to provide security for the country's upcoming elections.

This six-day course is designed to augment officer skills with specialty training in effective election security issues. Instruction provides basic knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding to maintain order and assure peaceful elections.

Using classroom lectures, discussions and practical exercises, the course covers roles of the election security force, policing in a democracy, crowd control and officer safety, use of force, and conflict intervention topics.
