Coalition Attacks Known Terrorist Safe House

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2004 – Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy operations director for Multinational Force Iraq, announced in a statement today that another known terrorist safe house in Fallujah was hit during a June 30 air strike.

That operation, Kimmitt stated, "employed precision weapons to attack the safe house and underscores the resolve of multinational and Iraqi security forces to jointly destroy terrorist networks within Iraq."

The coalition also announced that a U.S. Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed today while conducting security and stability operations in Iraq's Anbar province. And a Multinational Force Iraq soldier was killed and two were wounded today after an improvised explosive device attack on a convoy south of Mosul.

A Task Force 1st Armored Division soldier was killed and four other soldiers were injured in a non-combat-related single-vehicle accident June 30 north of the Iraq-Kuwait border, a coalition news release said. Also on June 30, a mortar attack in west Baghdad left 11 soldiers wounded.

The names are being withheld until families are notified.

Lead elements of the Iraqi Intervention Force's 2nd Battalion began operations in Baghdad June 28, in coordination with multinational forces, as one of the first directions of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, a coalition news release announced today. The battalion is the Iraqi army's first deployed and operational battalion. The unit will conduct security patrols in the city as part of the Iraqi security forces' continuing mission to provide security to the citizens of Iraq, the news release added.
