Stevens spoke at the conclusion of DoD testimony before the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee April 27. Stevens has served in the Senate for 36 years.

Stevens, the senior senator from Alaska, praised the way Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff work together. "Others may not agree with me, but I've been privileged to be at meetings, Mr. Secretary, that you've had with the Joint Chiefs," Stevens said. "I've never seen such a relationship between the chiefs and the secretary: open discussion, open critique and a give and take that was very ... very helpful and very healthy as far as the department is concerned."

Stevens then turned to Myers, who has served as chairman since 2001. "I have been a devotee of General Eisenhower since World War II and had the privilege of serving under him," he said. "As I've told you personally and I'd like to say publicly now, you come as close to Ike as any general I've ever known, so we thank you very much for your service and we look forward to being with you whatever you do.

Myers is scheduled to step down as chairman in September. President Bush has nominated Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the vice chairman, to succeed him.
