Marine Dies in Iraq; Two Suspects Detained After Failed Attack

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2005 An American Marine was killed April 1 during security operations in Ramadi, Iraq. The same day, U.S. soldiers detained two suspected insurgents after a failed attack on a coalition base near Hawija, according to Multinational Force Iraq news releases.
The deceased Marine, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
The two detained suspects were seized after firing at a coalition base guard tower from a pickup truck. Coalition forces used an unmanned aerial vehicle to track and ultimately capture the suspects. Soldiers from the 116th Brigade Combat Team detained the two men and confiscated the truck and two weapons.
