Bates Returns to AAFES
American Forces Press Service
DALLAS, June 18, 1998 Army Brig. Gen. Barry D. Bates assumed command of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service here in May. He was vice commander from 1995 to 1996.
Between AAFES assignments, he was assistant chief of staff, C-4/J-4/G-4, U.N. Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea/8th U.S. Army.
"My time in Korea impressed upon me the fact that we have a special mission in our overseas locations," he said. "Customers there don't have the opportunity to comparison shop. We are their retailer in most cases. We need ... to ensure we provide the wide range of services and merchandise they need and don't have an alternative source for."
About his return to Dallas, Bates said, "I was hoping I would get the opportunity to come back. You never really know where the needs of the services are going to take you. ... It's kind of like coming home. In my first staff meeting, there was only one person in the room that I didn't know."
