Slide into OPSKI

FORT LEE, Va., Jan. 13, 1997 – A new, cooperative promotion will mean an opportunity for military and DoD civilians to save money at ski resorts this winter.

All skiing aside, the promotion is significant as the first project of the new Executive Resale Board Cooperative Efforts Committee, which that representatives from the military exchanges, the Defense Commissary Agency and morale, welfare and recreation activities. The group develops joint programs benefiting military personnel.

The committee's first venture is Operation Ski and Snowboard, or OPSKI. Patrons of the military resale system and morale, welfare and recreation activities can take advantage of discounts and packages at 135 ski resorts nationwide from Feb. 26 to March 16. The program, available in the lower 48 states and Alaska this year, is open to active duty and reserve component members, family members and retirees as well as customers of MWR programs and information, ticket and travel offices. This often includes civilians and federal employees who work on installations.

Commissaries and exchanges will promote the ski and snowboard discounts in late January and early February. Installation MWR offices have added information and special coupons for the promotion.

The program is the brainchild of OPSKI Director Larry Bearfield. Participating resorts are offering free ski or half price "learn to ski or snowboard" programs. "We are sending out 760 packages with over 100,000 coupons for skiing," said Bearfield.

In addition, exchanges and commissaries will have entry forms and displays in stores for customers to have a chance to win an all-inclusive trip for four to Purgatory Ski Resort in Colorado.
