Cohen Salutes Jordan's Hussein, "Soldier for Peace"

National Guard Bureau

MUNICH, Feb. 8, 1999 – "King Hussein was a soldier for peace," Defense Secretary William S. Cohen said on learning of the Jordanian leader's death of cancer at age 63.

Cohen, in Germany to meet with international security leaders at the 35th Munich Conference on Security Policy, released a statement Feb. 7 hailing the Middle Eastern leader who ruled his nation for more than 40 years.

"He fought for stability in the Middle East and the security and welfare of his people," Cohen said. "Jordan, the region and the world benefited from his leadership. King Hussein provided wise counsel to President Clinton and to American cabinet members. Because Jordan is the third largest recipient of U.S. military aid, I worked closely with King Hussein and his government.

"During my last meeting with him in Amman, he gave me an extensive briefing on Jordan's security challenges. Later at a dinner with Mrs. Cohen and me, he and Queen Noor described their work for the people of Jordan. It is obvious why he was so loved and admired by his people.

"King Hussein was a strong, humane and visionary leader. The world will miss him."
