Deadline Nears to Register for Pentagon Memorial Contest

BALTIMORE, Aug. 20, 2002 – Aug. 23 is the deadline to register to submit ideas for a memorial to be built at the Pentagon to commemorate Sept. 11, 2001.

All who register have until Sept. 11 to submit their ideas, visions, concepts, proposals or suggestions. The memorial will be built adjacent to the impact area where Pentagon and airline victims died Sept. 11 last year.

Submissions must follow a specific format and meet certain requirements. The quickest way to obtain information and to register at the competition Web site, memorialcompetition.pentagon.mil. [link no longer available] A competition packet can be mailed, but time is running out. Call 1-866-782-4383 (toll free in the United States). General project information is available at pentagonmemorial.nab.usace.army.mil.

About 1,300 individuals and teams have registered to date with the Baltimore District of the Army Corps of Engineers, which is managing the memorial project. There's no fee to enter this worldwide public competition.
