WASHINGTON, April 17, 2002 – Members of a South Korean religious delegation today presented DoD Comptroller Dov S. Zakheim with a check for $110,000 to be used for a new Pentagon memorial meditation area sponsored by military chaplains.

Reverend Kim Jang Hwan, an evangelist known as "South Korea's Billy Graham," presented Zakheim with a plaque during an afternoon ceremony held in the comptroller's office. The ceremony included American and South Korean Salvation Army officials.

Kim noted that the Christian Churches of the Republic of Korea, a group of Baptist churches in Korea, had offered a nationwide prayer Oct. 14 for the victims and families affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Kim is a strong supporter of the United States and of the American presence in South Korea.

Salvation Army of Korea Lt. Col. Lee Sang Hyung then gave Zakheim the check.

The nondenominational mediation room will include a memorial wall commemorating the victims of the attack on the Pentagon.

The plaque and check were presented on behalf of the Korea Church Committee for U.S. Terrorist Attack Victims and will be donated to the Chief of Chaplain's Fund.

After thanking the group for the plaque and donation, Zakheim remarked, "We need healing in this building; we also need peace."

Victims of the Pentagon terrorist attack paid a price for freedom, the comptroller noted.

"And, we know that our Korean friends standing together with us are ready to pay a price (for freedom) every day," Zakheim added.

Among others attending the ceremony were Army chaplains, and American Salvation Army and DoD officials.
