American Forces Press Service

BAGHDAD, March 5, 2010 РIraqi forces, with U.S. advisors, arrested six people yesterday suspected of planning terrorist attacks leading up to the country’s scheduled national elections, military officials said.

In southern Baghdad, a combined unit searched a residential building for a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq member believed to assist the terrorist group in acquiring funding, as well as staging improvised explosive device attacks throughout the capital city.

Following preliminary questioning and an examination of evidence at the scene, Iraqi forces identified and arrested the wanted man.

During a second security operation in northwestern Baghdad, a combined unit searched two buildings for a suspected AQI member believed to be planning IED attacks prior to the upcoming elections.

Information and evidence gathered during the operation led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest the wanted AQI member and two suspected accomplices.

During a third operation, conducted in Bayji southwest of Kirkuk, Iraqi police and U.S. advisors searched a residential building for a suspected AQI leader for central Diyala province who is believed responsible for multiple attacks against security forces.

After conducting preliminary questioning and examining the evidence at the scene, police arrested two suspected associates of the warranted man.
