Nuclear Posture Review

The Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) is a legislatively-mandated review that establishes U.S. nuclear policy, strategy, capabilities and force posture for the next five to ten years.

Nuclear Posture Review Key Points and Facts:

  • As the NPR nears completion, it has identified and focused on some of the most significant issues. These will require Presidential attention. As the interagency continues to carefully develop options for Presidential decision, the administration has concluded that additional time is required to address appropriately the range of issues under consideration in the NPR.
  • The target date for submission of the NPR report to Congress is now March 2010. Prior to that, the administration intends to bring a classified summary of the NPR to Congress in conjunction with the budget and the other strategic defense reviews so that there is a policy context for the budgetary choices in these areas.
  • The review will not be concluded before the President has reviewed and approved its findings and recommendations.
  • DoD has engaged members of Congress on the emerging NPR findings and recommendations, in addition to apprising them on the need for a revised deadline for submission of the final NPR report.
