Inspector General

The Inspector General of the Department of Defense (DoD Directive 5106.01), under the provisions set forth by Public Law 95-452, serves as an independent and objective official in the Department of Defense who is responsible for conducting, supervising, monitoring, and initiating audits, investigations, and inspections relating to programs and operations of the Department of Defense.

The Inspector General provides leadership and coordination and recommends policies for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of, and to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in, such programs and operations. The Inspector General is also responsible for keeping the Secretary of Defense and the Congress fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of such programs and operations and the necessity for, and progress of, corrective action.
