Military Departments
The Military Departments (DoD Directive 5100.1) are the Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Air Force (the Marine Corps is a part of the Department of the Navy).
Each Military Department is separately organized under its own Secretary and functions under the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense. The Military Departments are responsible for organizing, training, supplying, and equipping forces for assignment to the Unified Combatant Commands.
