IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 058-97
February 06, 1997

OPERATIONS TO END AT PIRINCLIK AIR BASE, TURKEY

The Secretary of Defense announced today that the Department of Defense will end operations at Pirinclik Air Base in Turkey.

This action will begin immediately, with return of the installation to the host nation planned for September, 1997. It will affect about 117 U.S. Air Force personnel currently assigned to the base.

This return is the result of the general drawdown of U.S. bases in Europe and improvement in space surveillance technology. To date, more than 800 European locations have been returned to the host nation, reduced or placed on standby.

The U.S. government is not reducing its commitment to Europe or Turkey. Turkey remains a vital U.S. ally and a key regional partner with the U.S.
