Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen orders military to begin evacuation of Americans and third country nationals from Albania
Secretary of Defense William Cohen directed the United
States European Command to begin Operation SILVER WAKE, the
ordered evacuation of noncombatants from Albania to ensure the
safety of American citizens and designated third country
nationals, early this morning. A European Command
Assessment Team of 24 Marines deployed Thursday, March 13, to
assist Ambassador Marisa Lino with preparations for the
evacuation.
Travel from safe havens to final destinations will be
coordinated by the Department of State.
