DEFENSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON WOMEN IN THE SERVICES TO HOLD SPRING CONFERENCE IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Secretary of Defense William Cohen today announced that the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services will hold its spring semiannual conference at the Washington Dulles Airport Hilton from April 9-13, 1997.

The DACOWITS is composed of prominent civilian women and men from throughout the United States representing the professions, industry, and public service. Members are appointed by the Secretary of Defense for a three-year term without compensation.

The committee was founded in 1951 by the late Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall during the Korean war to assist the Department of Defense in the recruitment and retention of servicewomen. Now in its 46th year, the committee has provided useful advice to the Secretary of Defense on policies relating to the effective use of women in the Services, promoted public acceptance of military service as a career field for women, and served as a vital link between the Armed Services and civilian communities in relating the roles and accomplishments of military women.

The DACOWITS 1997 Spring Conference will be supported by the U.S. Navy and presided over by Dr. Judith Youngman, the DACOWITS Chair. The conference, open to the public and news media, will include a general business session and subcommittee sessions with discussions and briefings on overseas assignments, equal opportunity advisor utilization, forces development and utilization stand reporting format, height/weight/body fat standards, and child care.
