IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 580-08
July 10, 2008

U. S. Installation Realignment In Italy Announced

The Department of Defense announced today the decision to inactivate and return eight communication sites to Italy. The sites are: Mt. Cima Gallina, Mt. Paganella, Mt. Corna, Mt. Cimone, Mt. Serra, Mt. Venda, Ceggia, and Coltano Communications Site.

These actions are part of an on-going modernization initiative to employ fiber optic cable where possible to streamline communications.

There are no personnel associated with these sites and their return will have no impact on military operations in Europe. The United States plans to return all of the sites to the host in 2009.

As with all stationing actions, the United States has coordinated with host nation officials prior to this public announcement.

For additional information regarding this announcement, please contact U.S. European Command public affairs at (+49)-711-680-6618.
