NAVY TRANSFERS MIDWAY ISLAND
The U.S. Navy, along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
will celebrate the dedication of the historic island of Midway
as a National Wildlife Refuge today, April 3, at 4 p.m. during a
ceremony on the island.
Participating in this historic event
will be Secretary of the Navy John Dalton, Assistant Secretary
of the Interior Bonnie Cohen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the
Navy William Cassidy, and Fish and Wildlife Service Director John
Rogers.
Located about 1,250 miles northwest of Honolulu, Midway is
best known for the historic Battle of Midway during World War
II. Today remnants of Midway's role in history are interspersed
amidst millions of migratory seabirds that come to the atoll to
nest . Under Navy jurisdiction since 1903, the island now falls
under the Fish and Wildlife Service and for the first time in
more than 50 years is open to the public.
