MAJOR GENERAL WARREN L. FREEMAN
APPOINTED TO RESERVE FORCES POLICY BOARD
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen has announced the
designation of Maj. Gen. Warren L. Freeman as the Army National
Guard member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board effective May 1,
1997. Freeman currently serves as the commanding general of the
District of Columbia National Guard.
The 24-member board was created by Congress in 1952. Acting
through the assistant secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs,
the board serves as the principal policy advisor to the secretary
of Defense on reserve component matters. Members include the
assistant secretary responsible for reserve affairs from each of
the military departments, and active and reserve component
general and flag officers representing all Services, including
the Coast Guard.
Born in Jackson, Ga. and raised in the Washington, D.C.
area, the general's military career spans more than 29 years --
with a majority of it in the service of the D.C. National Guard.
That career began as an enlisted soldier who, after serving more
than two years, moved on to a commission as a second lieutenant
from Officers Candidate School in July 1969. Following
commissioning, he attended basic courses in both infantry and
military police schools. His military experience includes
service as a platoon leader, tactical officer, a variety of staff
and operations officer positions, and several command billets
before assuming his current position in December 1995.
Freeman holds a bachelor's degree in management from Pacific
- Western University, Los Angeles, Calif., and a master's in
management from National - Louis University, Chicago, Ill. He
has also completed numerous military schools including Army War
College, National Defense University, Reserve Component, Command
and General Staff College, and the Harvard University JFK School
of Government, Program for Senior Executives in National and
International Security.
Freeman's military decorations include the Legion of Merit,
Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army
Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force
Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf
cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with four oak
leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with one star,
Humanitarian Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with
one hourglass device.
Freeman currently resides in Mitchellville, Md.
