IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 455-97
September 04, 1997

AIR EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO DEPLOY

U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) fighter aircraft will soon increase their presence over Bosnia. Aircraft from units based in the United Kingdom and Germany will join other NATO aircraft in supporting Operation Deliberate Guard. F-16 aircraft will deploy to Aviano Air Base, Italy in USAFE's first test of its rapidly deployable air expeditionary force (AEF) concept.

The concept will test the command's ability to use its own fighter and airlift assets to support NATO operational requirements. The aircraft will deploy to Aviano to provide NATO's Allied Forces South additional air interdiction, close air support and airborne, forward air control over the Bosnian skies.

KC-135 and C-130 support aircraft will also provide air refueling and logistical airlift to the expeditionary force.
