Deputy Secretary of Defense John J. Hamre will cut the ribbon to officially open a permanent exhibit depicting the first 50 years of the Department of Defense on Monday, September 15, 1997 at 9:30 a.m. (EDT). The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on the second floor of the Pentagon between corridors 1 and 2 at the A-Ring. This ceremony starts a five-day celebration that will include numerous activities, displays and special events to mark the Golden Anniversary of the Department.

In conjunction with the ribbon cutting ceremony, there will be an unveiling of the special United States Postal Service Commemorative Cancellation. A cancellation station will be set up near the exhibit and will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. September 15-19. Commemorative envelopes have been designed and will be given away at the station. In addition, stamps may be purchased and hand-canceled with the special cancellation. Free commemorative gifts, such as educational bookmarks and magnets, also will be available.

During the week of festivities, commemorative items such as pens, T-shirts, and mugs will be sold by the Fort America Shop located on the Pentagon Concourse. Special cakes commemorating DoD's 50th birthday also will be available for purchase at Gretel's Pastry Shop on the Concourse.

As a special observance of the Golden Anniversary, the Pentagon's Center Courtyard Ground Zero Cafe will remain open during regular business hours. In the Center Courtyard performance area, military bands will appear as follows:

Monday, Sept. 15 11 a.m. U. S. Army Band
Wednesday, Sept. 17 11 a.m. U. S. Navy Band
Thursday, Sept. 18 11 a.m. U. S. Air Force Band
Friday, Sept. 19 11 a.m. U. S. Marine Corps Band

On Tuesday, September 16, at 11 a.m., The Bachelor and Bachelorette Square Dance Club will perform in the Pentagon's Center Courtyard in front of the ceremonial stage.
