Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced that the Department of Defense will observe Red Ribbon Week, the annual drug awareness, prevention and education campaign, from Oct. 23-31, 1997.
"I encourage all military commands and other Defense Department organizations to participate in this observance in every appropriate manner. I am confident that our efforts will continue to contribute significantly to the goal of a drug free America," Cohen said in announcing the observance.
"The Department of Defense has long been in the forefront of the nation's efforts to control the use of illegal drugs," Cohen said. "Whether it is in support of drug interdiction efforts by law enforcement agencies, drug testing and education efforts within Defense Department communities, or voluntarily reaching out to others in need of help in the broader community, the Defense Department has been steadfast in its efforts to confront this problem. Drug abuse is a national security concern that will continue to demand our best efforts."
