Pentagon Press Secretary George Little provided the following readout:
“Yesterday in Paris, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter held meetings with several senior French defense officials, including Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian, Presidential Military Adviser Gen. Benoit Puga, Ministry of Defense Senior Political Adviser Jean-Claude Mallet, Chief of Defense Adm. Edouard Guillaud, and Francis Delon, General Secretary for Defense and National Security in the office of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.
“Dr. Carter commended the French for their progress in--and decisive commitment to--their operations in Mali. He noted the progress of French forces, which have delivered significant blows to terrorist networks in northern Mali. And he provided assurances of continued US support for this important mission.
“Dr. Carter and French officials also discussed Afghanistan and French defense strategy, the future of which will be defined soon in a French government white paper.
“The discussions reinforced the strong U.S.-French defense relationship and military-to-military cooperation between the two allies.”
