On May 15, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert O. Work met with Singaporean Minister of Foreign Affairs K. Shanmugam at the Pentagon.
During their meeting, Deputy Secretary Work and Minister Shanmugam discussed a wide-range of issues, including the positive trajectory of the multifaceted U.S.- Singapore relationship and recent developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
Both leaders noted the importance of enhancing multilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and multinational anti-piracy efforts. Work expressed his appreciation for Singapore hosting the forward deployment of U.S. Littoral Combat Ships and the recent offer by Singapore to establish a regional disaster response crisis center.
Work relayed Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel's interest in following up on the success of the U.S.-hosted ASEAN Defense Forum held in Hawaii in April 2014, and noted that the secretary looks forward to attending the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore at the end of May.
