Secretary Hagel met in Singapore today with Japanese Defense Minister Onodera Itsunori.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, a major annual forum for key leaders in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss security challenges and opportunities.
Secretary Hagel thanked the Minister Onodera for his leadership and for his continued support of the U.S.-Japan alliance. They discussed a range of regional and global security issues, to include Chinese maritime claims and military activities, North Korean provocations, and the situation in the Ukraine.
The secretary reiterated the strong support of the United States for Japanese efforts at defense reform and modernization, and to working closely together with the leadership of the Japan Self-Defense Force to improve mutual cooperation and capabilities.
Secretary Hagel and Minister Onodera reiterated their shared commitment to concluding the review of the Guidelines for U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation by the end of the year.
Secretary Hagel also expressed his gratitude to Minister Onodera for Japanese efforts to move forward with the Futenma Replacement Facility, and reiterated the U.S. commitment to plans for the realignment of U.S. Forces on Okinawa.
