DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ESTABLISHES WORLD WIDE WEB SITE FOR MILITARY TEENS

The Department of Defense Office of Family Policy has activated a World Wide Web site for teenage children of Service members and DoD civilian employees. The site, "Military Teens on the Move," at http://www.dod.mil/mtom serves as a one-stop, interactive information source for teenagers seeking to connect with each other and explore the unique challenges and opportunities of military life.

"Military Teens on the Move was designed to help teenagers moving to a new military installation. It provides information and hyperlinks on everything from homework to volunteer activities," said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel Support, Families and Education Carolyn H. Becraft. "A monitored chat room and bulletin board help teens keep in touch and enhance local youth sponsorship efforts."

The Revision and Codification of Military Family Act and Military Child Care Act (P.L. 104-106, S. 568) requires youth sponsorship programs at all military installations. Military Teens on the Move supports this requirement by making detailed information on how to start and maintain sponsorship programs available whenever teenagers need it. Links to Department of Defense Education Activity schools, the bulletin board, and chat room make it easy for military teenagers to get information and get to know each other regardless of their location.

In addition, Becraft believes the new Web site will allow DoD to give military teenagers the information and support they need on a timely basis. She also hopes military teens will soon be able to earn important volunteer credits by creating and updating pages for the site. The DoD Office of Family Policy is exploring a number of options that would help realize those goals.

Military Teens on the Move is the latest in the Military Assistance Program (MAP) suite of Web sites developed by the Office of Family Policy. The entry point to the suite is the MAPsite at http://dticaw.dtic.mil/mapsite which links to Military Teens on the Move and other family support sites, including the Military Child Development Program, the Standard Installation Topic Exchange Service, and Defense Outplacement Referral Service.
