ARMY RESERVE, GUARD FORCES IDENTIFIED FOR POSSIBLE CALL-UP IN OPERATION JOINT FORGE
Nineteen U.S. Army Reserve, or USAR, and Army National Guard, or ARNG units, providing up to 271 soldiers, were notified this week to begin training in preparation for possible mobilization in support of Operation Joint Forge, the name given for the U.S. military peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. These units have been notified to give them maximum training time prior to any possible deployment. Projected mobilization dates for these units vary from August 1998 to April 1999. By law, Army National Guard and Army Reserve units called up to participate in Operation Joint Forge can serve no more than 270 days.

On June 21, six soldiers from the Army Reserve's Company B, 6th Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, Dobbins Air Force Base, Ga. and Company A, 2nd Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, Willow Grove, Pa. were mobilized for Operation Joint Forge.
As part of our Total Force policy, the Guard and Reserve are indispensable to U.S. military operations. Reservists in support of Joint Forge perform combat and combat support missions, including artillery fire support, civil affairs, logistics, public affairs, medical support, and other critical functions. There will be no overall increase in the number of Guard and Reserve personnel authorized to support operations in Bosnia as a result of this action.
This activation reflects the increasing reliance being placed on the National Guard and Reserve in the post-Cold War world. The U.S. military Reserve components contributed nearly 13 million mandays of support to missions and operations during fiscal year 1997-the equivalent of adding roughly 35,000 personnel to the end strength of the active force.
Since December 1995, nearly 17,000 Guard and Reserve members have supported Operation Joint Endeavor, later named Joint Guard, and now called Operation Joint Forge. They have served from bases in Bosnia, Croatia, the U.S., Hungary, Germany, Italy and elsewhere in Europe.
