Release No: 388-98
July 23, 1998

The Department of Defense announced today that it is sponsoring its 1998 Worldwide Equal Opportunity Conference at the Birmingham, Ala., convention center on July 26-29, according to Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management Policy Frank Rush.

This year's conference focuses on the 50th anniversary of President Harry Truman's signing of Executive Order 9981 that mandated the equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the Armed Services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin and resulted in the desegregation of the Armed Forces.

"This year's conference will provide an unparalleled look at equal opportunity, equal employment opportunity, and human relations issues that are key to the Department of Defense remaining as this nation's leader in equality and fair treatment in the 21st Century and beyond," Rush said.

More than 1,400 military and civilian conferees from DoD agencies and sites around the world, as well as, U.S. Coast Guard personnel are expected to attend. Conference participants are also expected from the international community and from private industry.

Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre will deliver the conference keynote address and General Johnnie E. Wilson, Commanding General, United States Army Material Command, will present the conference opening.
