Release No: 509-98
October 01, 1998

The 1998 Department of Defense Maintenance Symposium and Exhibition will be held Oct. 18-21, at the Fort Worth Convention Center, Fort Worth, Texas. The theme for this year's symposium, which is co-sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association, is "Maintenance: Today's Challenges-Tomorrow's Vision."

This second annual conference is the single opportunity for the entire maintenance community to come together to share information in preparation for the rapidly changing logistics support environment. The symposium is designed to help participants understand the role of maintenance in the overall context of the current logistics transformation. It is also planned to encourage a crossfeed of perspectives among counterparts in industry and related activities.

  • Symposium planners say their agenda includes open-forum discussions among senior defense maintenance managers and opportunities for questions from the audience. They point out that "Today's Challenges" are best summed up in the focus of the Defense Reform Initiative (DRI). This initiative will aggressively apply to DoD those business practices that American industry has successfully used to become leaner and more flexible in order to remain competitive. In addition, "Tomorrow's Vision" will be extensively addressed in consonance with the four major areas of DRI.
  • 1.
  • 2. Reengineering, including best business practices, will be the focus of a breakout group on reducing response times.
  • 3.
  • 4. Consolidation to remove redundancy will be looked at from the perspective of regional maintenance in the Navy.
  • 5.
  • 6. Competition will be emphasized in two breakout groups. One on competitive sourcing, and another on lessons learned from recent privatization efforts.
  • 7.
  • 8. Elimination of unneeded infrastructure will be addressed by main speakers in the plenary sessions.

A special event at this year's symposium will be the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards Banquet that will be held Tuesday night, Oct. 20, 6:30-10:00. During the banquet, awards will be presented to units of the military departments that have demonstrated exceptional maintenance accomplishments.

The entire 1998 DoD Maintenance Symposium is open for press coverage. The media point of contact is Glenn Flood, (703) 695-6294.
