October 27, 1998

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen has appointed Mary J. Wamsley as chair of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) for calendar year 1999. Wamsley succeeds Elizabeth T. Bilby in the non-salaried position, and will begin her one-year term Jan. 1, 1999.

Wamsley was appointed to DACOWITS in 1997 and has served on the Forces Development and Utilization Subcommittee. Since Jan. 1, 1998, she has served as vice chair of that subcommittee.

Wamsley is the assistant chief of police of Commerce City, Colo. She is currently president of the board of trustees, International Association of Women Police; co-founder and president of the Colorado Association of Women Police; and active in numerous other law enforcement and advisory foundations and associations.

Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall established DACOWITS in 1951 to advise the Secretary of Defense on policies and matters relating to women in the armed forces. The committee is composed of 30 to 40 civilian members selected on the basis of their achievements in business, professional fields, civic service, and by geographic location.
